Yes. Most importantly, Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate! Eat a light meal prior to ultrasound. Refrain from caffeine, i.e., coffee, soda. Be active and on your feet for at least a couple of hours prior to US if possible (especially early morning ultrasounds).
In some rare cases, you may need to prepare for your diagnostic test by fasting.
Staff will provide you with specific instructions on how to prepare for your test.
During your ultrasound, an experienced sonographer will apply warm gel to your skin and use a transducer (a handheld device) to examine the blood flow in your legs. The ultrasound is non-invasive, painless, and typically takes 60 mins. You will start by lying down on an exam table, then stand to evaluate your veins more thoroughly.
You have two vein systems:
That's an excellent question! While the great saphenous vein is sometimes used for heart bypass surgery (CABG), if it is diseased or not functioning properly, it likely wouldn't be usable for a bypass surgery anyway. There are several other veins and arteries that can be used for (CABG), such as the internal mammary artery, radial artery, small saphenous vein, and other veins in the arms and legs.
Most insurance plans will cover treatment for chronic venous insufficiency if it is deemed medically necessary. For details specific to your coverage, we recommend you contacting your insurance provider directly.
LVA accepts most major insurance plans, including but not limited to Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Medicare, and United Healthcare. To verify coverage under your specific plan, please call us directly.
Absolutely!
While vein procedures address the root cause of the problem, there are conservative options that can help manage your symptoms and slow progression. These include:
These options help manage symptoms and can relieve discomfort, but they do not correct the underlying vein issue. If your symptoms worsen or affect your quality of life, treatment can always be reconsidered in the future.
